The island is rightfully popular with divers and shallow water snorkelling. it lies of the north western edge of Koh Tao but the only access is via long boat or much larger passenger ferry which brings in the day trippers from the surrounding islands. The thin beach though very narrow can handle the numbers of visitors and most of the larger groups of day trippers only stay for a couple of hours. As an act to protect the tranquillity of the island plastic bottles have been banned and there is a 100THB access fee to the island. This fee is covered by the organised tours and it is very dubious if the money is spent on the ecosystem. A manifestation of calm and serenity, the island has two main beaches, Suan Yai and Ao Kao and a red sand beach, the Ao Pai. Tracing their roots to a Siam government official of Chinese descent who purchased the whole island in the late 19th century, native islanders resisted the urge to sell off land to outside developers back when Ko Chang really caught on as a tourist destination in the 1990s and 2000s. Their patience resulted in a balance between low-level tourism and more traditional ways of life. Contrasting the mountainous jungle of Ko Chang and Ko Kut, Mak’s 15-square-kilometre interior mostly consists of rubber and coconut groves between pockets of tourism-related development. With clear water (when calm) lapping up to soft sand that strikes shades of ocher, pink and amber, the beaches are good, although not as attractive as those found on Ko Kut. Nearly invisible sand flies can be a real nuisance at certain times and places on Mak—check with locals before you sprawl out for a nap. We do think Mak beats Kut when it comes to activities and ease of getting around, and the overall vibe seems friendlier to us. The Erawan Waterfalls in the Erawan National Park, the Sai Yok Noi Falls, the Sai Yok Yai Falls and the Huay Mae Khamin falls are a must visit among the many others present in Kanchanaburi. The entire length of the seven tiers span approximately 1,500 m through the thick rainforest of the park. Each of the steps has its own name. The access to the first waterfall – named Hlai Keun Lung, is relatively easy, as you can get there on a flat trail, directly from the visitor centre’s car park. The highlight of this first waterfall is the great number of fish swimming in the ponds formed by the smooth limestone sculpted by the water. The fish are rather curious and will swim around your legs. It can be disconcerting at first but you soon get used to it. The trail gets steeper as it carries on to the next tier, Wung Macha, which is usually busier with swimmers. It’s very scenic as there’s a small cave under the falls. Another hike of about 50 m takes you to the third tier, called Pha Nam Tok. This tier is taller than the two first falls (about 20-metre high), and offers a large pond, again filled with fish, at which you can refresh yourself. Oke Nank Phee Seah and Bua Mai Long are the fourth and fifth steps of Erawan Waterfall. They feature small cascades and ponds surrounded by rock formations and dense vegetation.
