At a distance of 3 km from McLeod Ganj Bus Stand and 9 km from Dharamshala, Dal Lake is a small mid-altitude lake situated near the village of Tota Rani on Mcleodganj-Naddi road in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.
The beautiful Dal Lake stands at an altitude of 1,775 m and is one of the popular sightseeing attractions of McLeodganj. The greenish lake is home for various species of fish. It is a best base camp for trekkers in Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj. It is situated on the crest of a hill and affords a panoramic view of the Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar Ranges.
This oval shaped lake is surrounded by deodar trees and is considered to be a sacred spot as there is small Shiva Temple on its bank. According to legend, sage Durvasa prayed to Lord Shiva here. Every year during the month of September, large number of Lord Shiva devotees flock to the Dal Lake to attend famous festival celebrated at Lord Shiva temple. Boating facility is also available at this lake.
Quaint and clam, Dal lake is filled with greenish water. The lake is shielded by the rugged mountains and luscious forest of deodar trees. On the bank of the Dal lake, tourists can see the famous Shiva temple.
Dal lake is mostly visited by tourist during the month of September as a fair is organized on the bank of the lake which is attended by the people of the Gaddi tribe in a large number. The fair is celebrated to mark the presence of Lord Shiva. Dal lake is a perfect site to laze around with picnic baskets as one can enjoy boating and many other activities.Flanked by lush greenery and blooming trees, the placid Dal Lake is counted amongst the major tourist attractions of McLeod Ganj.
